The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Kwara State chapter, Mr Toyin Saliu, has called for improved welfare for teachers in the interest of the Nigerian education system.
Saliu said this in Ilorin on Thursday 12th September, 2019, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, stressing that teachers remain the drivers of education.
While commenting on the poor salaries of teachers across the country, he stated that although teachers were being poorly paid in the country, they deserved a better treatment for offering their services to produce the future leaders of the country.
He further appealed to government at all levels to appreciate the work of teachers by paying them on time.
“It is time we stopped promoting teachers without any financial backing or depriving them their promotion arrears. Teachers are not slaves,” he said.
“We claim we want to improve education standard in the country, yet we are carelessly handling teachers’ welfare. How is it possible to achieve this without treating our teachers well,” he added.
He also commended the Kwara State Government for taking giant efforts to conduct competency test for principals and vice principals in the state, describing as a morale booster, which would allow merit to count in attaining such sensitive career posts.
Saliu therefore enjoined teachers to make discipline their watchword and be committed to service delivery
