To further improve the safety of students against the spread of coronavirus in the state, the Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, has warned parents across Lagos State to limit the movements of their children.
While issuing the warning on Thursday 19th March, 2020, at the training organised on school safety for prefects in Education District VI of the state, he stated that school closure begins on Monday 23rd March, 2020.
He also advised parents not to allow their children hawk during the closure of the school.
“We have told them that as they are going on break, they should stay in their homes. They can interact with their friends on social media. This is not the time for them to be roaming around. I am sure our teachers will give them enough assignments to keep them busy. For parents who give their children goods to hawk, this is not safe at this time,” he said.
He noted that the training was organised to allow more schools in the district to learn more about safety measures.
“Regular hand washing will curb the spread of the virus in schools. We have already introduced to them the need for regular hand washing before they enter their classes and when they come back from the toilets. If need be that they want to sneeze or cough, it should be done to the elbow,” Mojola added.
The Lead Consultant on School Safety for Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Dapo Taiwo, noted that the programme was aimed at teaching the students and their teachers how to identify hazards within the school environment.
“There are many things we expect the schools to put in place to ensure the safety of the students in schools. The first is a safety management system which is a written document that will guide the school on safety. Once that is put in place, the school must follow the document and must meet the standard of the safety commission,” Taiwo said.
