An assistant lecturer of Mathematics Education in the Department of Science and Technology Education, University of Lagos, Modiu Olaguro, has volunteered to teach Further Mathematics at State High School, Ibereko, Badagry, Lagos State.
Modiu, who disclosed this on his Facebook wall on Friday August 14, 2020, said he thought of helping the students prepare for the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
“I woke up last week Tuesday to the thought of helping these students prepare for the forthcoming WASSCE examination,” he said.
He said he chose State High School because he attended the school between 1999 and 2003.
He added that although it’s publicly owned, it belongs to his town (Ibereko).
“My town gave out the land and even started its construction,” Modiu added.
The school principal granted him the permission to carry out the task.
“The permission was granted after assuring and reassuring her I was not there to make a kobo.
“I volunteered three days of the week to teach them Further Math.
“We worked on Vectors, Crammer’s Rule, Differentiation, Integration, Probability, Partial Fractions, Surds, Indices and Graphs of sine and cosine functions,” Modiu said.
According to him, the students were all willing and eager to learn. They appreciated the gesture. And he enjoyed teaching them.
“With large classes occasioned by inadequate teachers, the government can look into co-opting willing minds to volunteer to teach in schools. We’ve got some very serious students,” he advised.
