Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM ), Mrs. Olabisi Ariyo, has charged teachers to always display a positive attitude while teaching children, stressing that a stimulating and energising tutoring process is pivotal to success.
Mrs. Ariyo, who stated this while delivering the keynote address at the opening of a virtual training programme organised by the Directorate of Teachers’ Education and Capacity Development tagged “Educating the Educators”, opined that educators need to put in their best to make learning interesting to their students.
She advised the teachers to always develop their vocabulary through continuous reading, saying “As good teachers, you need to energise the pupils’ verbal skills by striving to be good orators in order to engender a wonderful and interesting journey in tutoring these wards”.
“You also have to imbibe positive mental attitude towards your students. Attitude is contagious. You need to inculcate a positive attitude and empathy towards them. Be on the same wavelength and ensure connectivity with them”, the Chairman added.
The lead facilitator, Mrs. Anjolaoluwa Badejo of Bridgevine Resource Limited, noted that the foremost attitude of a successful teacher is to have a positive mindset, pointing out that such a mindset will determine the failure or success of the learning process.
She opined that a positive mindset has a great impact on how the teachers deliver their individual assignments.
In the same vein, the Teaching Service Staff Development Centre (TSSDC), Owutu, in collaboration with the Mathematical Association of Nigerian, (MAN), took mathematics teachers in State Post Primary Schools on a virtual training tagged “Pedagogy of Teaching Mathematics in the 21st Century”.
The facilitator, Mrs. Grace Oluremi Ladipo from Jagunmolu Girls’ Senior School, maintained that the era of making mathematics difficult for students is over, suggesting that teachers should encourage students and attend to their different needs by considering their different backgrounds.
She further advised that teachers should get closer to their students, make teaching and learning participatory, give room for inquiries and be ready to assist them in solving practical problems.
