Top 10 inexpensive private universities to consider in Nigeria

Keen observers of the education space agree that education excellence is an important factor which contributes greatly towards nation building. 

In Nigeria, the excellence required of the public higher education sector has been truncated by persistence of inadequate funding, lack of instructional materials, outdated curricula and syllabus for learning and years of industrial strike actions, among others. 

Private universities are leading the mission to bridge this gap and leverage on the various adversities and challenges plaguing public institutions in the country. 

Edugist had earlier reported that Nigeria’s federal government approved twelve private universities after receiving their operating licences in 2022 and began operation in 2023.

Official data from the National University Commission’s website shows that there are one hundred and eleven (111) private universities operating legally in NIgeria.

Although the tuition fee of each school varies, depending on the course of study. However, the fee given is the starting fee for the cheapest course in each university.

Students looking to enrol into private universities may consider the following inexpensive options.

Obong University, Akwa Ibom

Tuition starting at: N180,000 (per semester)

Obong University is situated in Obong-Ntak, Akwa Ibom State. It was established in 1997 as the then African College of Management. 

The college has Natural and Applied Sciences faculty with certifications accessible in Computer Science, Microbiology, and Biochemistry. 

In the faculty of Arts and Humanities, certification programmes are accessible in English Studies and Religious Studies. 

The Faculty of Management and Social Sciences offers certifications in Economics, Accounting, Mass Communication, Marketing, Sociology, Peace Studies and conciliation, Public Administration, International Relations and Political Science.

Oduduwa University, Osun
