Nigeria might have been living true to the words of George Orwell that, “The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.” But the nation is certainly on a recourse with the reintroduction of History as a subject into the curriculum of Primary and Junior Secondary School levels, Edugist can affirm.

This news was announced in Abuja on Tuesday by the Executive Secretary of The Nigeria Education Research and Development Council (NERDC), Prof. Ismail Junaidu. According to him, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports, the reintroduction of History as a subject is set to begin from the 2018/2019 academic session.
Though, the National Council on Education had approved the reintroduction of the subject since July, the implementation of the approval would kickstart after the curriculum had been distributed to states, NAN further announces.
“All states are expected to be sensitised and teachers trained on how to use the curriculum before the implementation can begin.
“We need to give the states ample time to put their house in order before we start implementing the curriculum,’’ Professor Ismail told NAN.
Daily Post also revealed on its website that NERDC had forwarded a sample of the new curriculum for History to the states to give them ample time to plan ahead of its implementation.

He went on to add that the subject would now be a standalone curriculum and would be taught from Primary One to JSS Three since History is already in the Senior Secondary School curriculum.
