Parents who refuse to heed the call to send their children to school will be sanctioned in accordance with the laws of Sokoto State, Governor Aminu Tambuwal has said.
This is just as he said Sokoto government and the Nigerian Navy would collaborate to construct blocks of classrooms using the affordable burnt brick technique in all the 36 districts in the state.
Speaking at the flag-off of an advocacy campaign to boost school enrolment for the eastern part of the state in Durbawa village of Wurno local government area, Tambuwal said the advocacy committee, under the leadership of the Sultan, was initiated to sensitize parents on the importance of sending their children to school.
He described the proposed classrooms as eco-friendly and cost effective to build, adding that the project will be executed under Sokoto state consultative Committee on the Development of Education, headed by Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.
The governor said, “To encourage our traditional leaders to take active part in the promotion of education, let me announce here that each block of classroom constructed will be named after the District Head of the area in which it is sited.”
Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar affirmed the committee’s readiness to ensure all eligible children benefit from the state government’s education policy.
The state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Jabbi Kilgori, said the new enrolment drive targeted both traditional tsangaya schools in which 4000 out of 30,000 would benefit in the first phase.
