Junior secondary students from six states across the country will get an opportunity to win N1 million in the annual spelling bee organised by Decipher Solutions.

The non-profit organisation said it will consider students from Lagos, Abuja, Gombe, Kano, Port-Harcourt and Enugu.

Amina Abdulmalik, the project manager, said the competition was designed to foster reading culture and accurate pronunciation of English words amongst Nigerian students.

“The competition is targeted at students in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS1 – 3) across Nigeria and is designed to help students improve their reading culture, advance their spelling proficiencies, increase the range of their vocabulary and boost their correct use of the English Language by encouraging targeted efforts in proper word usage,” she said.

Previous editions of the competition had been restricted to junior secondary school students in Abuja.

The competition will also include workshops on essay writing, prose composition, poetry writing, and game design.

Abdulmalik described the competition as a unifying platform that allows students from diverse backgrounds across the country including public and private schools to engage and compete fairly.
