Corps Member Trains Teachers in Kogi

Written by Akeem Alao

A National Youth Service Corps member in Kogi State, Attah Blessing Edidiong, organised one-day training for teachers in public schools at the Children’s Amusement park in Lokoja Local Government Area on Monday 22 July, 2019.

Edidiong stated that she initiated the training in order to equip teachers with more knowledge in their profession.

The training, a part of Edidiong’s personal community development service was tagged: ‘Seminar/training for teachers and welfarism for humanity’.

Edidiong stated that the training aimed at promoting the culture of diligence, and self-reliance would help teachers discharge their responsibilities effectively.

Speaking, Edidiong noted that although teachers were the most neglected, that should not deter them from giving their best to their students.

She appreciated the sponsors of the project, including Prof. Otokmefa of the Department of Microbiology, University of Port Harcourt, who she described as a great personality and mentor. She also thanked the Proprietress of Koggie Academy, Mrs Mary Egeuda.

Mrs Egueda explained that a good teacher must have objectives, sense of purpose, humour, and maintain good communication with parents to give their learners emotional support.

She stated that teachers were expected to know when to listen to pupils and when to ignore them.

She therefore implored teachers to help students discover their potential, motivate them, give them inspiration and guidance, as that would ultimately spur them to success.

Other topics discussed at the training included: ‘Helping a child to choose a career; How to help a child that learn slowly, among others.’

Some of the teachers who took part in the training said the opportunity had improved their horizon and greatly helped them to efficiently and effectively impart good ideas to their students.
