The Kano State Government has explained that the newly declared free and compulsory education in the state only covered the students’ school fees, instructional materials and infrastructure.
It was stated parents and guardians were expected to buy exercise books, text books and school uniforms for their children and wards.
While explaining to parents in Kano on Wednesday 25th September, 2019, Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Education, Hajiya Loritu Disso noted that it was not the responsibility of the state government to purchase books and uniforms for the students.
Disso further explained that the parents should complement the effort of the state government by providing necessary writing materials and school uniforms.
Does it mean that parents in Kano State would just fold their arms, send their children to school because the state government has declared free and compulsory education without exercise books and uniforms?
“The uniforms supplied by the government are only meant for pupils in primary one, which will come up at end of September. Parents need to provide money for the purchase of uniforms, as well as Mathematics and English text books,” she added.
