The Imo State government have made the teaching of Igbo language compulsory in schools across the state.
Speaking on behalf of the state’s Commissioner for Education at the matriculation ceremony of the state’s College of Nursing and Midwifery,
the Director of Tertiary Education, Basil Iwu, said the learning and teaching of Igbo language would be compulsory for all students in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in the state.
While urging parents and guardians to teach their children and wards the Igbo language, he said Imo State government had resolved to make the Igbo language a compulsory subject in schools in all the schools in the state.
He noted that children needed to know their roots and should be encouraged by teaching them the mother tongue in schools.
Parents and guardians were therefore implored to equally teach their children and wards Igbo language at homes.
