Odiolowo Ojuwoye LCDA yesterday hosted pupil and students from primary and secondary Schools for a spelling Bee competition.
The competition, which was a Pet Program of the wife of the Chairman of the Council, Mrs Muhibat Kehinde Ajala, took place in the main Hall of the council.
The competition commenced with the introduction of the guests.
The Chairman of the Council, Hon Rasaq Olusola Ajala, said the spelling Bee competition is a laudable Programme. He said this would enhance students’ intellectual development in English language. He said spelling would help them in pronouncing words correctly and improve their vocabulary.
He admonished them not to see their backgrounds as an hindrance to their successes. He said he was always proud to be a product of Mushin where he comes from. He said great people had emerged from Mushin from all walks of life.
Education Secretary for Mushin Local Government, Mrs Willy Akinlude, said the competition was a way of developing the children’s talent and potential.
She said the children have done well in the competition but they could do better.
She said the challenges had been inadequate of teachers to teach the subject.
The Chief Host, Mrs Muheebat Kehinde Ajala, said the competition had come to stay. She said it was initiated by the wife of the the leader of the All Progressive Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senator Mrs Oluremi Tinubu.
She said this type of competition would help the students to be at their best in English language spelling. She further said it was organised to prepare them for the state competition.
On the performance of the pupils and the students, she commended their effort. “They have all tried their best but believed they can do better,” she added. She called on the teachers to do more in terms of preparing them for the task ahead.
The head of Education department in Odiolowo Ojuwoye LCDA, Mrs Adetimehin Olufunke Elizabeth, said she was impressed with the performance of the students but said they could do more if government can provide them with more qualified teachers.
She encouraged the students to prepare more because they Will meet stiffer opposition at the State level.
She said she was looking forward to a better performance than what the LCDA got in their previous competition where they took third position.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of gifts to the winners in the competition.
In the primary school category, Ms Adebayo Ifeoluwa, who is in primary six and a pupil of Mushin Mission Primary School at Shokunbi was full of praise for the organizer of the competition. She said she was happy for coming first. She promised to read harder so that she can win something tangible from the state for the local government.
Akintona Busayo from Mushin Public School lives on Kayode Street said she was excited about her position- (second). She promised to work harder when the event get to the state level.
Bamidele Saheed, who emerged third thanked the organizer of the competition. He said he was happy to be part of it.
At the secondary school’s level of the competition, Ajao Kehinde came first, Atoyebi Tobiloba came second while Adepetu Taiwo came third.
They all promised to work harder before they get to the state level of the competition.
At the event were the Chairman of the Council Hon Rasaq Olusola Ajala, Secretary to the Council Hon Mujeeb Daramola, Deputy Leader of the legislative Arm of the government Hon Kola Eludepo, Majority leader Jon Bamidele Akinlade, Hon Segun Olamoyegun of Ward C3, Hon Imoleayo of Ward C1B, Supervisor for Youth and Sports Hon Rodiat Jimoh Ifeoluwa, Special Assistant on Hon Mukaila Bakare.
Others are the Council treasurer Mr Shuaib Badmus, Head of Education department, Mrs Adetimehin Olufunke Elizabeth and head of information Mr Adekolujo.
