Written by Akeem Alao

The Lagos State Education District III has celebrated the contributions of over 200 teachers in the District.

While speaking at the event, the Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary of the District, Dr. Olufolayimika Ayandele, lauded the support of the teachers towards the virtual teaching initiative of the State Government during the lockdown and school closure period.

Ayandele also leveraged the avenue to offer prayers for late teachers within the district.

Ayandele said that the death of some teachers during the period underscores the indispensable nature of death as a debt owed by everyone.

She added that teachers and everyone should maximise their time wisely and use it for the common good.

She stated further that the over 200 teachers, who engaged in online teaching and drew up programmes for students while they were at home, should be appreciated for being good ambassadors of the teaching profession.

The TG/PS also commended a retired teacher, Mrs. Modinat Edu, who volunteered to lend her support to educational advancement in the District despite being a retiree, as well as Mr. Wale Raji, a member of House of Representatives from Epe for his passion for the improvement of education in the State.

Dr. Ayandele disclosed that Mrs. Edu volunteered to supervise the face-lift and beautification of the school environment across the District and was also fully involved in the “Reading Book Project”, an initiative designed to train students to develop an interest in reading books.

She said that the theme for the event “Living in Crisis and Re-Imagining the Future”, brought to fore the contributions of teachers who provided remote learning and supported vulnerable populations by ensuring that learning gaps were bridged, despite the limitations imposed on learning by COVID-19.

Maintaining that the teachers in the District displayed great leadership and innovation through the quality of intervention programmes during the lockdown, Ayandele noted that they ensured that learning never stopped and that no learner was left behind.

“Our teachers have worked individually and collectively to break the challenges and find solutions by creating a new learning environment for the learners in order to ensure that education continued unabated.

“Our teachers have demonstrated responsible leadership during this COVID-19 crisis and these invaluable contributions mitigated the dreadful impact of the pandemic on the education of the learners. They embraced new technologies to confront the challenges frontally by confirming that they are firmly in charge with education”, the TGPS said.

On ways of re-imagining the future, especially during the post-COVID-19 era, Dr. Ayandele opined that “we must work to build greater resilience in our education system so that we can respond quickly and effectively to these and other crises”.

In her remarks at the event, the President of All Nigeria Conference of Principals (ANCOPSS), Lagos Chapter, Mrs. Folashade Moronkeji, specifically thanked the TGPS for always celebrating teachers in the District, saying that the gesture has been helpful in stimulating the interest of the teachers in the profession and in imparting knowledge to students.

She promised to continue to work with the leadership of the District to ensure the realisation of all lofty intentions and plans to uplift education in District III.
