The Chancellor of Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu, Osun State, Dr AbdulRahman Adedoyin, has said the university gives out loans to its graduates to support their businesses and fight unemployment.
The chancellor disclosed this in an interview in Ibadan on Monday.
He called on the federal and state governments to do the same, saying it would reduce the problem of youth unemployment in the country.
Adedoyin urged government at all levels to reduce their expenses on political office holders and channel such funds to creating jobs for the youths.
The OUI founder stressed that too much emphasis had been placed on education which prepared graduates to be job seekers.
He expressed that there should be a change in the narrative to tackle this and make the youth job creators.
“The Federal Government should pay attention to creating jobs for graduating students and drastically reduce expenses on political appointees. This will address unemployment to some extent.
“Imagine the number of students who graduate yearly; schools should offer more technical education to students. 70 per cent entrepreneurial education should be taught and made compulsory in schools,” he said.
“That is what we need to do to tackle unemployment and total dependence on importation which is wasting our resources. We import everything and these things are what our students should be able to produce if they get the necessary support.
“Loans which can be monitored should be given to graduates after leaving universities; this will encourage them to be independent. We give loans to graduates of OUI. We classify them to groups and give them loans for their businesses,” he added
Adedoyin said there would be more jobs for Nigerians if technical education and entrepreneurial studies were given more attention.
