Written by Elvis Boniface

From 5:00pm of 29th January, 2014, the Mbonu Ojike close of the University of Lagos, the venue of the 2014 Spring Festival Celebration of the Confucius Institute at the University of Lagos was agog with scintillating performances by the staff and students of the Institute to thrill the staff and students of the university.

As Christmas to the West, the Spring Festival, or Lunar New Year is the most important festival in China. Of all the traditional Chinese festivals, the Lunar New Year is perhaps the most elaborate, colourful, and important to Chinese people. In Lunar New Year Eve, Chinese people get together to have a family reunion in happy and auspicious atmosphere. It was wonderful to hold the gala in Lagos (UNILAG) like a family reunion to celebrate the Lunar New at such a special time.

Spring Festival Celebration 2014 was to further bridge the friendship between Nigerian and Chinese people, in which, the performances by Chinese teachers and their Nigerian students brought the essence of Chinese culture such as songs, dances, culture and specialty shows, as well as Kung fu show, etc . It was indeed a feast of eyes and ears of Chinese culture.

Notable guest in attendance included; France ambassador to Nigeria, M. Jean Michel DUMOND, his American and Chinese counterparts represented by Hill Mcharlin and Wang Yi, Professors Duru Oni and Olukayode Admund, deputy Vice-Chancellor dean of students’ affairs, University of Lagos, Prof. Jiang Lirong, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, UNILAG, lecturers and students of the institute, other invited guests and dignitaries.
