The Akwa Ibom State Government has suspended 34 students of the Government Technical College in Uyo
The decision was as a result of the violent demonstration on the school premises on Thursday 20th February, 2020.
Reports stated that a Divisional Police Officer sustained injuries during the crisis. Also, a worker at the college is currently undergoing a surgical operation.
During the demonstration,the students smashed the windscreens of vehicles within the premises.
The state Commissioner for Education, Prof Nse Essien, decried the students’ action, and he berated them. He stressed that they had turned the school into a den of hooligans.
He said the state government had ordered investigation to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the demonstration.
“We cannot sit and fold our hands and watch our citadel of learning turn into a den of hooligan,” he said.
“Government will constitute a full scale Investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the crisis.
“The 34 students among the demonstrators are hereby on indefinite suspension,” he noted.
He also stated that the affected students would the not return to the school until their cases have been reviewed,” he said
“The Government Technical College, Ewet, Uyo will close indefinitely. As a result, all pupils are to leave the school premises with immediate effect,” he concluded.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, N’nudam Fredrick, disclosed that eleven persons had been arrested in connection with the crisis.
