Written by Elvis Boniface

IT was a joyous timeat Adie-Owe Community High School, Agbara, Ogun State, as a facility comprising six toilets was constructed and donated by Samantha Chiazor and Aisha Mohammed, senior secondary school students of Corona Secondary School, Agbara.

The project which cost N1.7 million was an initiative of Chiazor and supported by Mohammed. The project was completed within three months and commissioned by the Ogun State Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Modupe Mujuota.
Speaking at the commissioning, Chiazor said she went to Havard with some of her school mates for a course and were taught to always give back to their community. “So we visited the community school to paint the classrooms.” She said they asked the students the challenges they were facing and what they needed most and majority said toilets.
“The toilet they had was a hole in the ground. I had never seen such before and thought it was not how a child should learn,” says Chiazor.
“I partnered with my friend, Aisha Mohammed and we spoke to the principal about our plans. We organised film shows at nights to raise money. We had a programme called Mufti Day, where interested pupils wore mufti to school instead of uniforms and paid us. I made T-shirts and sold them. I also sold three of my puppies to raise fund for the project.”
She said she was grateful to her parents for providing a greater chunk of the money to help her use the project to mark her 16th birthday.
Mohammed stated that they had to do it for the community school because only a good learning environment could contribute significantly to the mental, psychological and moral development of students.

Mrs. Mujuota while commissioning the project said that what the students had done showed that community resided in everybody. Mujuota who was represented by Mr. Olalekan Adeleke said: “On behalf of the state government, we appreciate the donors for their thoughtful deeds.” He urged the management of the school to judiciously utilise the facility, urging stakeholders to support the government in its quest to provide quality education for students in the state.
