The University of Lagos, (UNILAG) has announced postponement of its 2020 convocation ceremony.
The convocation, which had earlier been scheduled to hold between March 9 and 12, will no longer hold because of a supremacy battle between the university management and the Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, Wale Babalakin.
The university’s vice-chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe disclosed this at a press briefing ahead of the convocation.
The VC gave details of the activities for the event, including a convocation lecture by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami.
Mr. Babalakin wrote the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu. He explained his Council did not approve of the convocation ceremonies and urged the Minister to halt the process.
The minister in turn, through the ministry’s permanent secretary, Sunny Echonu, wrote to the National Universities Commission (NUC), as the regulatory agency.
The university’s public relations officer, Taiwo Oloyede, however, confirmed the development. He noted that, “The institution has postponed the 2020 convocation ceremony.”
